Fodder radish - Green manure

Raphanus sativus

4020

Fodder Radish is a deep-rooting, fast growing green manure. It can reach a height of about 80-110 cm. This crop combats nematodes, suppresses weeds and adds organic matter to the soil.

Features

Fodder radish is a three-in-one crop. First, it is a fast-growing, deep-rooting green manure, growing to a height of 80-110 cm. Its thick taproots improve aeration and drainage in the soil. When the crop is ploughed in, it adds a lot of organic matter to the soil. The plant is therefore a soil improver in all respects.

The crop develops quickly after sowing, so it rapidly suppresses weeds. This is the second important feature of this crop. Fodder radish is also highly effective at controlling cyst and root-knot nematodes.

Fodder radish can be sown in spring and autumn. Sow in spring to control the beet cyst nematode. When the crop is three-quarters in bloom, it should be mown to a height of 25-30 cm. The plants will then regrow. This is referred to as stubble drilling.

Sow: May-mid September
